The rector expressed his joy at the achievements of the university’s representatives, wishing them determination and continued success in both sports and academics. According to him, this international result enhances the university’s reputation and demonstrates that KU is capable of fostering highly skilled young people who successfully combine studies with sports.
Coach Mindaugas Stašys emphasized that the World University Games is a unique sporting event that brings together the best students from around the globe. He said it was an honor to represent Lithuania at such a high-level tournament and to return to the university with a medal.
Gediminas Leščiauskas shared that it was his first opportunity to participate in an international student competition of this scale and to represent Lithuania. He highlighted the impressive opening ceremony – watched by about 30,000 spectators – the fireworks, live performances, and the overall emotional atmosphere of the event. According to the athlete, an important part of the experience was the opportunity to interact and live alongside athletes from other countries, such as South Korea and Brazil. This, he said, allowed him to truly feel the spirit of the international sports community. Leščiauskas stressed that at Klaipėda University, it is possible to successfully combine sports and studies regardless of the chosen field of study – the key is motivation and perseverance.
As a reminder, the Lithuanian team defeated Germany 80:70 in the bronze-medal game, securing third place. Both Mindaugas Stašys and Gediminas Leščiauskas represented Klaipėda University in the coaching staff and as a player, respectively. The Universiade bronze medal marks one of the most significant victories for Lithuanian student basketball in recent years and highlights the role of universities in strengthening the country’s sports potential.
