Klaipeda University Freshman Nikas Kvasys Heads to the Kyokushin Karate European Championship in Hungary

This Saturday, September 27, Klaipeda University (KU) freshman of the Leisure Sports study program, Nikas Kvasys, will compete at the Kyokushin Karate European Championship in Debrecen, Hungary. This competition is particularly significant for the athlete, as it will be his first time competing in the adult category.

Nikas has been practicing karate for 13 years. Since 2021, he has consistently pursued top results on the international stage. Over the past four years, he has won gold medals in all three events at the European Championships: in fighting (kumite), in technique performance (kata), and in the team kata competition.

“This championship is very special to me because I will compete in the adult category for the first time. It’s a new stage and a serious challenge, but the experience I have gained over many years of training gives me confidence. I am going there determined to achieve the highest possible results,” said the athlete.

Nikas chose Klaipeda University and the Leisure Sports program because in the future he wants to work as a coach in his own club.

“This program suits me perfectly. My first impressions of the university are very positive: the lectures are interesting, the professors present information clearly and engagingly, and I’ve also been lucky with my classmates,” said Kvasys.

The KU Leisure Sports study program is the only one of its kind in Lithuania. Upon graduation, students are awarded a bachelor’s degree in sports and a professional teaching qualification. Students can specialize in leisure sports, basketball, football, or ballroom dancing. These specializations are developed in cooperation with Lithuanian and international partners, which means plenty of practical experience, direct engagement with the sports community, and real career opportunities after graduation.

“At Klaipeda University, we provide the conditions to combine academic goals with professional sports. Our Leisure Sports program is unique in Lithuania, and its graduates go on to become coaches, teachers, and leaders in sports. We are delighted that more and more high-performance athletes are choosing Klaipėda University. Nikas’s story is yet another example that here one can successfully pursue two paths at the same time – achieving victories in sports while building a solid professional foundation,” said KU Rector Prof. Dr. Artūras Razbadauskas.

Klaipeda University takes pride in its students’ achievements in sports and actively encourages combining academic studies with the pursuit of high-level athletic excellence.
